Dunmore East 2012

The 2012 EFSA European Species Championship was hosted by EFSA Ireland and fished from Dunmore East on the weekend of 28th – 29th of April.

Five sections were represented in the entry of 64 which included 2 Ladies and 1 Junior. 8 boats were chartered to bring the anglers to the fishing grounds.

In the weeks leading up to the event the weather had been very changeable but the long range forecast was showing a clearance for the weekend of the event.

The check in and opening ceremony took place in The Cliff Restaurant on Friday April 27th where the anglers enjoyed a finger food and wine reception.

Saturday morning saw the anglers on the pier at 7.30 to load the boats and head out for the fishing grounds. The single target species was cod and the supplied bait was squid and mackerel.

Weather conditions deteriorated during the day and the anglers were subjected to an uncomfortable days fishing. The conditions forced the boats to stay on the inside marks which are not as productive for the target species.

At the end of day 1 with the anglers battered from their efforts during the day and with the forecast for even worse conditions next day it was deemed necessary to cancel day 2. This decision was taken in conjunction with the boat skippers.

As a result of this the scores from day 1 were to be the final result.  A total of 185 cod were recorded. 1 in the 25cm to 30cm grade, 123 in the 31cm to 50cm grade 58 in the 51cm to 60cm grade and 3 over 61cm. The best fish was 65cm which was caught by Scotland’s Willie Carr. The best catch was 13 fish recorded by Ireland’s Dave Rylands.

The presentation dinner was brought forward to 5pm on Sunday April 29th. Guest of Honour was Suzanne Campion from Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Following an exceptional meal in The Cliffs Restaurant the presentation of prizes was conducted by EFSA Ireland’s Secretary Warren Doyle and Chairman George McCullough.

The top 3 prizes were presented by Suzanne Campion and the awarding of the EFSA Pins was conducted and performed by EFSA England Chairman Neil Bryant who graciously accepted the task.

The overall winner and recipient of the Gold Species Pin was Scotland’s Billy McCormack with a score of 88 points for 11 fish. In second place and winner of the Silver Species Pin was Ireland’s Dave Rylands with 81 points for 13 fish. Third place and the Bronze Species Pin was claimed by England’s Pete Bailey with 60 points for 9 fish.

The Life Member Medals were won by Dave Rylands – Gold, Derek Yuille – Silver, Roy Shipway – Bronze.

The pairs event was won by Dave Rylands and Milo Burke, second were Billy McCormack and Willie Carr followed by Richard Russell and Kim Bowden.

The 4 man team result was as follows:

Heiko Dreier, John Cronin, Dave Rylands, Milo Burke.
Billy McCormack, Ian Bryce, David Proudfoot, Scott Gibson.
Richard Russell, Kim Bowden, Pete Bailey, Barrie Senior.

The executive 4 man team result was as follows:

Matt Osborne, Billy McCormack, Billy Murray, Milo Burke.
William Clark, Roy Shipway, Dave Rylands, Shay O’Neill.
Pete Bailey, Derek Yuille, Dylan Kearns (Junior), Brendan Murphy.

The International Teams result was as follows:

Scotland A: Scott Gibson, Derek Yuille, Billy McCormack, Willie Carr, David Proudfoot.
Ireland B: Jimmy Jones, Terry Carolan, Kieran Rice, Mick Clarges, Dave Rylands.
Ireland A: Tommy Squires, Joe Gough, Dara Rice, Shay O’Neill, Roy Shipway.

The seniors category saw Denmark’s Allan Riboe and England’s Richard Russell tie for first place on 45 points for 6 fish. EFSA Ireland treasurer Christy Cloak followed on 24 points.

EFSA Ireland would like to express their thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped in the running of the event and especially those who contributed sponsorship. This included Viking Tackle – Bray, Waterford Outdoor and Angling Centre, Shamrock Tackle – Dublin and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Langeland 2011

48 anglers from 6 national sections met to compete in this year’s European Species Championship from October 29 to October 31.

On Saturday the competitors arrived in the head quarter hotel Skudehavn in Rudkobing, the main city in Langeland. Anglers arrived by all means air, land and sea. Whilst our friends from Portugal and Iceland were competing for the furthest distance, admiration has to go to Yulia and Mikhail who drove all 2000km from Moscow.

The event was opened by the organizers, Thomas Reinhardt and Marcus Wuest. This was followed by the registration and the boat draws for both days. People could then register for the pairs event and the executive teams of four were drawn too.

Each angler was handed out a goodies bag with traces, a species competition cap and information material about Langeland.

On Sunday morning meeting was at 8:30am for the boats leaving at 9:00. The boats returned at 3pm to the port of Spodsbjerg harbour. In between was a demonstration by the Danish anglers as to how to catch the bigger flatfish. With a minimum size of 30cm expectation was that there would not be caught too many scoring fish. However, there were plenty of dab, plaice, flounders and even a brill caught that made the minimum size. Best catch of the day was 32 flatfish with a total of 469 being caught by all anglers. Locals Bo and Joergen measured each fish by the harbour. Each angler was also eager to swap their token for a couple of sausages and a drink to bridge the time of the measuring of the fish. Some anglers kept their catch for their own consumption others left them for the local fishery community to enter the food chain.

Word spread fast that a pirk with a trace below the pirk and the boom trace from the goodie bag above was the way to fish. This was demonstrated on the second day when the best catch of 23 was complemented by 589 fish overall. Again some fine sausages and drinks awaited the anglers.

After another round of measuring it was time for the dinner and prize giving. A brief opening speech by Marcus Wuest got proceedings under way. The dinner was a buffet with plenty of food. Despite some bigger and hungrier anglers and their partners present there was some food left over. Even though nobody was really starving anymore the apple tart and cream desert was gone in no time.

The prize giving followed with a thank you to the sponsors: Brugsen supermarket for supplying the food at the weigh-in, Hotel Skudehavn for the ladies prizes and Angelcentrum Langeland for the generous sponsorship. Another thank you went to the skippers who brought everybody over the fish.

Apart from the sponsors there was a lot of work going on in the background. Bo and Joergen measured more than 1000 fish. Maja handed out the food and drink at the weigh-in. Hans-Juergen Glaeser assisted with the scoring. Apart from Thomas and Marcus we had Herbert Schaffner and Alex Dorow performing their stewards’ duties on both days. Chris Reinhardt, Thomas’ wife assisted all round with scoring, food, kept the shop open and offered loads of moral support. A special thank you had to go to Svenja Reinhardt, Thomas’ daughter, for packing 96 portions of worms for each angler for both days. And what good quality they were.

The three top individuals were awarded pins. They were: Martin Hubert Jensen (gold), Sören Kristensens (silver) and Cees Vader (bronze). Nobody believed this to be a coincidence that all three came from Denmark. All of the top 10 were awarded prizes

This was also shown in the national team results with Denmark A taking top honours ahead of Germany A and England B.

For the other results see below.

What remains are memories of a very smooth championships. The organisers enjoyed the positive feedback many anglers gave. Most of them also indicated they would come back and bring even more anglers along next time such an event is being hosted in Langeland…
