EFSA Russia trip to Norway tried to challenge the cod fishing 4 and 8 kg line records

Weather was usual for these Polar area (far north above the Polar Circle) in March: had to use showels to dig up our 7 m open boats in the Big Adventure fishing camp (Hasvik, Soroya island) in order to be able to go offshore. March – April are the best months for targeting big cod going for eggs delivering from the Russian Barents Sea down to the Norwegian Lofoten islands area in large quantities. The effort paid off and Oleg Bartenev has managed to land the massive 26 kg cod on the ANDE Tournament 4 kg monoline (exceeding the current EFSA record standining since 1984 by almost 2 folds!) while I been lucky to improve the 8 kg line record by 100 gramm lifting nice and fat 21 kg cod on the ANDE Tournament line as well. Both fishes were weighed in on the Hasvik fish factory certifeid scales and new record claims submitted to EFSA fish recorder.

Results – Fun Fish (Flounder) 2016

Fun-fish flounder 17th Jan 2016

Following the AGM Mark Smith, Ash Currier and I ventured off to Hamworthy to look for a suitable shore venue for the Sunday, the sun was shining and with very little wind there was hardly a ripple on the water. Ash started off with a good sized flounder on his 1st cast he soon added another, we had a little over 2 ½ hours fishing and managed to land 8 flounder between us (well Ash and me, Mark appeared to be saving himself for the following day) Rob Quinn and Graham Lewis decided to head to holes bay as there had been reports of a few large flounder coming from this area, they didn’t manage to find one but a local rod did find a decent size one of around 2 ¼ lb.

I headed to the same mark that we had found on the Saturday afternoon, what a difference a day makes! Coloured water, wind in your face, overcast and a choppy sea, hopefully the flounder that were here yesterday remained today. I spent 2 hours without a bite, perhaps this venue fishes better on the ebb rather than the flood. After 2 fruitless hours my rod slammed over with a take that was obviously not a flounder, as I was only fishing in 2ft of water the fish surfaced almost immediately a nice bass of around 2lb, a local angler stated “that’s a keeper” my reply was to inform him that it is illegal to take bass at present not that I would kill such a juvenile bass even if it wasn’t illegal, his response was “who would know” well me for a start! After a quick move to find a bit of tide I did manage to find one flounder. The majority of the shore anglers headed for either Whitecliff or the Lagoon, out of the 11 shore anglers only 4 weighed in with Reg Clough beaching 5 for a respectable 2.33kg

Shore
1st Reg Clough 5 fish = 2.33kg
2nd Alan Jones 3 fish = 1.9kg
3rd Jerry Knight 1 fish = .87kg
4th Martin Bobbett 1 fish = .55kg

The crew on Our Gemma managed to persuade the skipper (Mervyn Mimms) to go into really shallow water where they spent the first hour parked on the mud catching nothing, However when the boat re-floated fish came in regularly throughout the day, at lines up 32 flounder were landed. Both Richard Wheeler and Tony Sherwood ended up with seven fish a piece. Richard Wheeler won the competition pipping Tony by a mere .01 of a kilo.

Overall results

EFSA Scotland Cod Festival 2015, Arbroath

EFSA Cod, Pairs Champions - Steve & Scott GibsonThis year’s EFSA Scotland Cod Championships at Arbroath turned into a real battle of the Champions as previous winners Peter Redshaw, Steve Souter, Scott Gibson, Billy Murray and Jim Henderson, as well as reigning EFSA Individual Champion, Robbie Robertson, were all drawn together on the same boat.EFSA Cod - Willie Sommerville longest cod

Despite strong winds and high seas curtailing fishing to a single day, there were still plenty of fish to be caught among an ever growing minefield of ropes and creel markers on grounds to the north of the venue.

Edinburgh’s Steve Souter carded the top bag with an imperious 31 cod haul from Altair to take the title and the prestigious EFSA Gold Pin. John Speirs secured runner-up position with an excellent 27 fish on Ardent, with Derek Yuille taking third.

Steve also won the Superpool in the Daiwa backed event with a total length of 1386cm, from John Spiers with 1219cm and Peter Redshaw on 1065cm.

The top Life Member prize also went to Steve, with Liverpool’s Micky Duff taking best visiting angler and Jim Henderson the best Senior participant. The longest cod award went to Willie Sommerville with a fish of 69cm. Steve Souter and doubles partner Scott Gibson clinched the pairs title.

Tribute to Donnie (Dull) MacAskill

Donnie Dull MacAskill fishing_01From our official facebook groups, in april 27:
Angus MacdonaldStornoway Sea Angling Club – Fishing
I would like to pay tribute to Donnie (Dull) MacAskill who passed away recently Aged 80. Donnie was one of the clubs finest anglers Winning the Western Isles Open Boat in 1976 and again in 1984, during the 1976 open we fished aboard the Highland Chieftain on the mark at the mouth of Loch Shell we went all day with just the odd fish coming in then at the end of the Day with about an hour to go the fish came on the feed, Donnie won the day and overall champion catching 267lb of fish a very memorable day if not tiring.
Donnie was also an International Angler fishing for Scotland in the EFSA Championships a few times the ones that i can remember were in Haugesund Norway 1979 where he picked up quite a few silver cups in the team events, then again in Scheveningen Holland 1981 in the photo shown is the Stornoway Club Members picked to fish in International team although that competition was only

memorable for poor weather conditions all week. Donnie was what a would describe as the Father figure to us youngsters keeping me in line and on one occasion told me off for saying at breakfast there were a lot of foreigners in hotel he said shut up you fool we are the foreigners here.
Later on Club members would remember Donnie working behind the bar as Steward along with his wife Ina. In the other photo shown is Donnie holding up what was then the club record for a Whiting of 3lb 6 1/4 ozs in 1982. I on behalf of the club members wish Ina and all the family our deepest sympathy for the loss of Donnie whom was a
great part of the Stornoway Sea Angling Club for many years.
