ITALCANNA: AN ITALIAN STORY

From the bamboo to the high module

Many of us would not know Segromigno in Monte, a little village in the province of Lucca, if there weren’t the seat of Italcanna, the Italian leading firm in the world of fishing.
A big establishment lets us guess the wide production and what strikes is the perfect order and the cleanliness of the well structured plant, where there is also a garden.
Carlo D’Olivo welcomes us, with his two elder sons, Giovanni Battista and Gian Marco, who firmly are willing to follow in their family’s footsteps, as Italcanna’s origins are really far-off. In fact the firm had already been existing when people went fishing with rudimentary equipment and the first products were rods built with material was used in the hexagonal bamboo rods. Afterwards they used glass until the recent introduction of the new carbon and kevlar. This is a field where it is always necessary to be in the vanguard and ready to accept every change and every new exigency.
This is just the force of Italcanna; they are able to interpret the signals coming from the fishers and to turn them into concrete instrument, suitable to face every new situation. All this is possible, thanks to organization of the firm itself, whose production is supervised during all the stages.
In fact they begin from the project, carried out with the help of the computer through a program elaborated by their own, up to the production, with specialized labor. For this last stage it is necessary to work in proper rooms, where temperature and the degree of humidity are constantly kept under control, in order to obtain a product with well determined characteristics. The rods are always painted with several coat of paint and the binding of rings is carried out carefully and accurately. All this care is evident in the finished product the one we can see in the next door shop’s window.
A careful look is certain able to recognize the difference between a high quality product, as this one, and a similar product coming from the Asiatic country: that made in Italy is really incomparable.
The proof? Many italcanna’s products are exported abroad, practically all around the word: we realized it as soon as we entered the wide storehouse. There we find a set of carefully packed rods, all with an unusual look: in fact they have been built to be exported to the Bahamas. Besides them, there is another set of rods to be exported to Fiji Islands and so on and this is the proof of Italcanna’s worldwide renown. And as for the Italian market? Lets start from the rods, amongst which we have only the embarrassment of choosing for every sea sport fishing technic, specific instruments of high quality are available.
The 2001 novelty for boat fishing is Formentera: It is a telescopic rods wholly built in high resistance carbon. It is provided with interchangeable tops, one of which is in carbon. For Big Game fishing we can notice the Cayman a stand up rods with blanks made with carbon reinforce.
Thinking about the big game fishing or the drifting it is impossible not mention the Gladiator, the reels which have been recently renewed both from the aesthetical and the mechanical point of view.
This year also a two speed model was introduced.
A very interesting feature for the users is a shelf stocked with all the spare parts, available for every need: the possible breakages of this precision instrument are actually rare, but in that unlucky eventuality it is very important to be able to count on the availability of spare parts ready for use.
