The EFSA Big Game Championship 2024 was held in Hout Bay, South Africa, 6 th to 10 th May
with nine teams on nine boats, each team consisting of three anglers and on the same boat with
the same crew the whole tournament. The teams came from England, Gibraltar, Iceland,
Ireland, The Netherlands, and three from South Africa, Gold, Yellow and Green Protea teams.
One team was a Barbarian team from Belgium, Iceland and Portugal. The main targeted fish
were Yellow Fin Tuna and Blue Fin Tuna. The HQ of the Championship was stationed in the
Atlantic Boat Club in Hout Bay.
The main organizing and planning of the Championship were carried out by SADSAA (South
Africa Deep Sea Angling Association) and the Western Province Deep Sea Angling club.
The competition was to be for four fishing days, but due to bad weather two days were
cancelled, the first day and the fourth day. The boats were fast going with two large outboard
motors with lots of power.
The championship was won by team Iceland that caught eight Yellow Fin Tuna with 360
points. In second place was the Proteas team that caught five Yellow Fin Tuna with 183.33
points, and in third place was the Barbarian team that caught four Yellow Fin Tuna with 180
points. As the championship was a country tournament the results of all the three teams from
South Africa was summed up and divided by three, thus the result of 183.33 points.
The EFSA European Big Game Champion 2024 was Skarphedinn Asbjornsson, Iceland with
130 points. In second place was Brendan Davids, Protea Yellow team and in third place was
Kim Bowden, England with 130 points. As all the three anglers got the same number of points
the places are decided by the number of fish each angler caught.

The EFSA European Big Game Championship was very well organized. The organizing team,
the boat crews and everybody that worked for the Championship did their work incredibly well
and without flaws. The boats were first class and very comfortable to fish from with friendly
and helpful crews. The Opening Ceremony with a cheerful local band and dancers in the Flag
parade, and the Closing Ceremony were superb with a three-course dinner and with the
possibility to choose many dishes from a menu card and served with excellent wine.
The point system.
In the EFSA Big Game Championship the organizer worked on a measuring system with the
measuring tape being color coded, and the fish were awarded points per color code as:
Yellow section for 20 – 40 KG fish
Pink section for 40 – 60 KG fish
Blue section for 60 – 80 KG fish
Chartreuse section for 80 – 100 KG fish
Orange section for 100 – 120 KG fish
White section was for a 120 KG fish and over.
The weights were based on the true measurement/weight ratio scale. Points were allocated
accordingly for each color section.
