EFSA European Species Championships Langeland, Denmark 2024 (Report)

On Sunday, 6 th of October, all 32 competitors from 7 sections met in Hotel Rudkobing
Skudehavn in Langeland, Denmark, for the opening ceremony. After a bit of tapas snacks the
two organisers, Thomas Reinhardt and Marcus Wuest explained how the upcoming days were
planned. As this was EFSA’s first ever small boat competition there were a lot of minutiae to
go through.
Unfortunately, the strong winds meant the practise day was to be moved forward to Tuesday
with the competition days now Wednesday and Thursday.
On Tuesday morning after a quick run through the boats for the angling skippers we headed
south from Spodsbjerg to start the practise day. Thomas was the designated lead skipper, and
everyone stayed within his vicinity as instructed during the day.
After this it was time for the competition to start in earnest.
The constant rain made this an interesting day at sea. Following from the practise session we
stayed at the most prolific area for flatfish during the day.
Excellent results were achieved with Lars Hellum (122pts), Gary Geoghegan (115pts) and
Charlie Lara (111pts) leading the way.
The Thursday was threatening with high winds again, so the fishing times were moved
forward.
Our top rods and pin winners over 2 days were Lars Hellum, Norway (210pts), Charlie Lara,
Gibraltar (189pts) and André Martinsen, Norway (186pts). See full results below.
Congratulations to all winners!
Overall, the competition was a success in this new format. A couple of tweaks might be
required for future similar events.
Special thanks have got to go to Italcanna for supporting us with a prize for the raffle which
generated more than €600 for the youth fund. But also thanks have to go to Chris & Tamara
Reinhardt for the registration, Angelcentrum Langeland for supplying the bait and prizes,
Hans-Jürgen Gläser for helping with the scoring, Nikolai from IBI boat rental for helping us
out with a special price and care of boats (petrol etc.), Jenne from Hotel Skudehavn for the
fantastic buffet and lastly the angling boat skippers Matt, Barrie, Kim, Lars, Charlie Lara,
Thomas Krohn, Thomas Reinhardt, Marcus.
I hope we have other sections coming forward with running similar events in the future.
